Generic for Imitrex

The generic name of Imitrex is Sumatripan. Imitrex is a medicine which is used to cure migraines and extreme headaches. This is a triple sulphide drug which contains a sulfonamide group to treat a headache or migraine attack. This drug works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain so that they painful symptoms are not felt. Imitrex is also useful in reducing certain substances in the body which cause pain associated with headache, nausea, sensitivity to sound and light and other such symptoms of migraine. Imitrex is marketed by the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline and is available the world over.

The patent for Imitrex expired in February 2009. Once this patent expired many other pharmaceutical companies brought out generic versions of this drug which are freely available at all leading pharmacies and even online pharmacies. All generic drugs sold at any pharmacies have to be approved by the FDA. Generic drugs are just the same as their brand name counterparts in composition, active ingredients, dosage instructions, dosage strengths and relief providing capabilities. The only difference is in their appearance although they are required to be of the same color. Generic drugs are cheaper in price when compared to brand name drugs because they are manufactured at more affordable rates which do not include the research and development expenses.

The Generic to Imitrex is available in several dosages. Depending on the dosage, a tablet of Imitrex will contain 35 mg, 70mg or 140mg of Sumatripan succinate which is equivalent to 25mg, 50mg or 100mg of Sumatripan. In most countries Imitrex is available only with a valid, medical prescription. If you are planning to purchase Imitrex from any pharmacy be sure to have your doctor's prescription ready.
