The drug works best when combined with a low fat diet. It belongs to the category of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or "statin". Zocor is used in controlling cholesterol in certain adolescents between the ages of 10-17 who have a genetically caused problem. A point to be remembered is that this drug is not a cure for cholesterol, it can only control. It is also useful in controlling the risk of blood vessel blockage, heart attack, stroke, and death due to heart disease.
Before Using Simvastatin / Zocor
Zocor may interact with some of the other drugs you are taking therefore its best to give your doctor up to date information about all prescription and over the counter drugs you are taking. You are advised not to take Zocor if you happen to be on HIV protease inhibitors (such as ritonavir, lopinavir, nelfinavir), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole or ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics etc. Extra care and monitoring of your general health as well as drugs maybe required if you are on amiodarone, "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), fibrates (such as clofibrate or fenofibrate), bosentan, cyclosporine, dalfopristin or quinupristin etc. Conditions such as kidney problems, muscle problems, alcohol use, allergies (especially to other "statins"), pregnancy, or breast-feeding etc maybe informed to the doctor firsthand.
