Depression is commonly explained as the condition in which a person feels an extreme low mood which can alter the pattern of his or her every day. From a medical point of view, depression occurs because of the change in level of certain components called neurotransmitters inside the brain. One may also start to have physical problems like unknown aches, vomiting, headaches, acidity etc. In extreme cases, the suffering individual may try to find peace of mind by getting indulged into abnormal activities like suicide, showing violence and even becoming a threat to others surrounding. The doctor can easily guess and confirm the degree of danger and can suggest treatment as per that. In most cases, the disorder is treated with the use of medications called antidepressants. These are oral medicines of various types, which can reduce the effect of symptoms and gradually curb the disorder as such.
The antidepressant medications administered by a doctor may fall in categories like, SSRIs, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants etc. SSRI or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors reduce the ailment by keeping the levels of serotonin neurotransmitter to a stable one. The MAOIs or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor is capable of blocking certain enzymes which can alter the level of neurotransmitters. Tricyclic block the alteration in levels of norepinephrine. However the patient should be careful while taking these antidepressants. The dosage of the medicine should never be altered without the advice of the doctor. One should also not stop consuming the medicines without the physician’s advice as this can lead to adverse withdrawal symptoms.
