THE TRUTH ABOUT CANADIAN MAIL ORDER PHARMACIES
If you or a loved one has been buying online then you have to have dealt with Canadian online pharmacies. Almost all international mail order prescriptions that are sold in the US are arranged by Canadian pharmacies. First lets talk about the history.
All of us witnessed the dotcom boom and bust. The birth of the Canadian mail order pharmacy business can be attributed to the dotcom revolution. Pre dotcom uninsured patients would load up in a bus at northern border towns and drive to Canada to fill their prescriptions and come back. The dotcom revolution meant that now you as a customer could order these products from the comfort of your home via the Internet. The first Canadian mail order and online pharmacy began towards the end of 1999. By 2001 there were more than 200 Canadian pharmacies that would accept orders via the phone and via the Internet.
This boom of course led to strong regulation and by the middle 2003 many of these pharmacies were not able to get enough product to feed the continuous rising demand from US customers wanting cheap medications. Some smart entrepreneurs started looking outside of Canada to Europe to source products. Finally a few of them looked at India and loved what they saw.
Indian pharmaceutical business was great. Very high quality product and due to strong regulation very low prices and a generic version of almost every brand being sold in the US. Prices in India were as low at 80% as compared to US and product quality was similar if not better in many cases. India had also become a very large exporter of pharmaceuticals to the US with many US FDA approved facilities.
Due to mix of these factors Canadian mail order pharmacies started offering India product to you, the customer. The US customer was always used to buying generics and the pharmacy offered prices between 40-50% lower as compared to US prices. Quality being very good no one complained.
However what consumers did not know was the price at which the Canadian pharmacies were buying these products. The pharmacies were marking up their products between 500%-1000%, yes 5 to 10 times as compared to what they bought it for in India.
Now we are all for making a profit but where does one draw the line between profit and profiteering. We all blame big pharma for profit gouging and profiteering as their products have a markup above 500%. What do you call it when a business marks up its products 1000%? We call it profiteering. The dictionary meaning of the word profiteering is a disproportionately large or unfair profit generated through exploiting an unusual or terrible situation.
The Canadian pharmacies made so much money because they relied on consumer ignorance and fear about buying from international sources. This money rightly belonged to you, the consumer.
How do we know all of this? It is because we have been a supplier to Canadian mail order pharmacies for the past 6 years in which we have filled more than 250,000 prescriptions. We can see the prices they charge to you, the unsuspecting consumer, and what they pay me.
Let us give you an example. Canadian pharmacies buy Clopidogrel (sold in the US under the name of Plavix) generic from India for $8 for 90 pills. They sell it to you the consumer for anywhere between $100 and $120 for 90 pills. You do the math. We call this profiteering.
